Introduction

NightSafe will evaluate Nightclubs under four distinct headings:

Prevention of Crime and Disorder
Public Safety
Prevention of Public Nuisance
Protection of Children from Harm


Under each of these headings there are a number essential criteria which must be achieved in order to achieve the NightSafe standard. Each venue will be independently audited against these criteria, before being accredited the award. Some of these criteria are statutory requirements, and others are new standards or new requirements over and above any current statutory or licensing requirements.

Incorporated into NightSafe will be various best practice guidelines, policy documents and templates, which will help nightclub operators develop the systems necessary to help reduce alcohol related harm, crime, and disorder.

To be accredited the NightSafe standard, it is a requirement to have a written :

Security Manual / Security Handbook

Risk, Incident & Claims Management Policy
Noise Control

As part of NightSafe, applicants will receive guidance and templates on how to develop the above, specifically for their venue.

Topics Covered

Drugs Policy Guidelines

covers developing a Drugs policy for the venue, training staff, signage, preventing drug dealing, preventing drug use, proper venue supervision, dealing with emergencies etc.


Security Manual

includes topics such as Code of Conduct Guidelines licensing, uniforms, opening procedures, closing procedures, positions & duties, communications, CCTV, reporting, dealing with customers, conflict management and resolution, physical intervention [ including Escorting, Ejection & Detention guidelines ] first aid and emergency procedures.


Risk, Incident & Claims Management Proced

This guidance document helps you identify Risk, and outlines steps to reduce, and minimise the probability of this risk taking place. It also goes through the probable steps to take when that risk does take place, dealing with the incident itself, the follow up procedures, and any claims arising from that incident.

Responsible Serving of Alcohol

Covers topics including the key provisions of the RSA policy, the control measures required, including security, bar service and management controls, responsible marketing of alcohol, responsible promotion of alcohol, and responsible serving of alcohol.

Fire & Emergency Procedures

in line with the Code of Practice for the Management of Fire Safety in Places of Assembly, your procedures should cover Management Duties, Fire Prevention, Staff Training, Fire and Evacuation Drills, Informing the Public, Escape routes, Assisting the Fire Brigade and keeping records. We endeavour to give you some guidance on what is best practice not just compliance.

Crowd Control

This guidance document covers a broad range of elements which affect how you hope to achieve effective crowd control. Environmental issues such as design & layout of the venue, lighting, CCTV, noise control and ventilation are covered. Operational issues, such as capacity management & control, staffing, incident management , communication, crowd control : congregation & dispersal policy.

Noise Control

This guidance document gives an overview of noise, the risks, exposure levels, your responsibilities, noise risk assessments, control measures, hearing protection, provision of information and training. It also gives you insights into working out daily or weekly exposure levels for your staff. As with all of our guidance documents, this document gives you some insights into practical steps and best practice that helps others in this area.
